The Liguria District of Marine Technology (DLTM) arises from the strong will of the local community and constitutes an emblematic collaboration between companies, research institutions and administration, which, starting from La Spezia, embraces the whole Region of Liguria.
The aggregation of institutions and companies in DLTM involves the largest industrial groups of Liguria, a consortium of more than 100 innovative SMEs, the University of Genoa and all the public and regional research entities with interests in the reference sectors, as well as a comprehensive institutional representation. The DLTM consortium is open to new actors placed in the territory of Liguria, which share its goals and objectives, and is subsequently in constant growth.
The DLTM consortium was established with reference to the mission identified from Liguria Region and the Ministries of Education, University and Research, and Economic Development, on the basis of the feasibility analysis carried out in 2008.
DLTM operates in accordance with the National Research Programme 2010-2012, as a territorial entity of sectorial governance for research processes, innovation and training, capable to involve all the actors in governance processes for the development of an integrated local and global planning, and the integration between research, innovation and training process, with the aim of achieving measurable impact in terms of growth of the territories intangible heritage.

TECHNOLOGY AREAS
DLTM ‘s technology competence areas are:
- development of systems for marine and shipbuilding,
- development of systems for naval defense and security,
- marine monitoring, drainage and safety
The up above mentioned areas, in the statutory description, are divided into the following development sectors:
- Shipbuilding (military and civilian)
- Yachting
- Offshore oil and energy
- ship and port systems
- instrumentation and mechanical/fluid dynamics equipment , as well as systems for naval and underwater applications
- intelligent logistics and security
- materials for marine applications
This specific focus on transversal technologies allows DLTM to operate an important integration between civil and defense sectors and between maritime industry and marine science, both in terms of technological growth and new business.
The District’s Mission is also focused on all the fields identified as key factors in knowledge society development.
R&D Area
- to increase the critical mass in terms of human, technological and financial resources, to achieve, in relation to the research process, important for the territory, levels of excellence, internationally recognized
- to create conditions to attract funds for financing research and innovation activity carried out by private and public investors
- to promote the establishment and strengthening of structures, new or existing equipment, for research activities
- to encourage the interrelation and communication both between researchers and the different structures involved, as well as between research and industry
- to ensure the implementation and the development of innovative projects shared between the research system and enterprises
Innovation and Business Development Area
- to promote and strengthen the innovation process of the territory, allowing the consolidation of existing enterprises and the establishment of high technology companies, also through the promotion of spin-offs and start-up, especially with reference to SMEs
Formation Area
- to create conditions to facilitate the qualification of human capital and creativity, through constant training and development of specialized skills in science and technology, such as strategic factors for success and competitive advantage.
